L-302 Transport of Munitions by Alternative Fuel Vehicles: Safety Considerations

May 2024
Matt Ferran, Dr Kevin M. Jaansalu

With the increasing prevalence of alternatively fuelled vehicles, particularly those powered
by lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, so too is there an increased likelihood that
such vehicles may be used to transport and handle munitions. Existing national civil and
military regulations for transport and handling of munitions were, for the most part, written
before these technologies existed and therefore do not consider their unique hazards.

This report considers the hazards associated with alternatively fuelled vehicles, how these
hazards may impact the safety of munition transport and handling activities, and the
current status of national civil and military regulations with respect to the same.
